The flagship of Rolex 

The first Datejust was the reference 4467 and it was only available in yellow gold with the corresponding yellow gold Jubilee bracelet, with its 36mm case it is the flagship of Rolex at the time.It has an open creamy white dial with applied gold batons to mark the hours and a "roulette" date window. It features a fine coin edged bezel, a gold edged date window, alternating red/ black date figures, a tiny bubbleback winder and a deeply domed back. This model was a 3 case part Ovettone model though it was soon replaced by a model with only 2 case parts.

The great development

At the beginning, one of the main characteristic of the Rolex Datejust was missing: the date magnifier. It is only in 1954, after nine years of production, that Rolex introduced the so-called Cyclops lens. At beginning, it only had golden edition, and then Rolex began produce rose gold edition, steel edition and dual color edition. Allowing for far easier reading of the date, the Cyclops lens became part of the Rolex signature. Following this development was the creation, in 1957, of a new movement calibre 1065 which was much lighter and slimmer allowing for a flatter back and therefore rendering the old domed back obsolete. In the same year Rolex also released stainless steel versions of the Datejusts, where previously they had only been available in yellow gold.
